About the Fermentary
This cacao comes from more than 500 smallholder farmers in the Rwenzururu region near the Democratic Republic of Congo, Semuliki National Park, and the Rwenzori Mountains. Latitude Trade Co. works directly with growers, collecting freshly harvested cacao and providing centralized fermentation and quality control, helping farmers earn more while producing exceptional cacao.
About the Region
Cacao was introduced to Uganda in 1901, but production remained limited until the late twentieth century. The introduction of improved Criollo and Trinitario hybrids in the 1980s helped transform the country's cacao industry. Today, cacao has become one of Uganda's most valuable agricultural exports and an important source of income for rural communities.
